Ways to get help if you need urgent or emergency care in North Tyneside

Accident and Emergency (A&E)

If you think you are suffering from a serious or life-threatening illness or injury, call 999 or go to your nearest Emergency Department. For North Tyneside residents, the nearest Emergency Department will usually be the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, or the Northumbria Healthcare Specialist Emergency Care Hospital at Cramlington.

Due to pressure on A&E departments, Northumbria Healthcare is asking people in North Tyneside and Northumberland to do their bit by thinking pharmacy, GP and 111 first, and not just turn up to A&E.

Urgent Care

Based at North Tyneside General Hospital (Rake Lane), urgent care provides medical care for minor injuries and minor illnesses which are not life-threatening.

Other ways to get help if you are feeling ill

  • NHS111 – Phone 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk for medical advice and information. They will help you get the care you need and can make you an appointment with your GP or Urgent Care Centre.
  • Your Local Pharmacy – Can give you advice, help you to look after yourself and treat minor conditions. Visit our Find a Service page to find your nearest pharmacy.
  • Your GP practice – Most practices are using a triage system either by phone or online. You will need to explain the problem you have and the support you need so that the practice staff can arrange the necessary care or treatment – by phone, video or in person.
  • Minor injuries unit at RVI – The minor injuries unit (MIU) is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary to assess and treat minor injury and illness. Find out more here.
  • LIVI – a video consultation with a trained GP who has access to your medical records. You will need to download the app and register to join the service. Find out more here.
