GP Access 2021
We continued our GP access research and asked you what you thought about accessing GP services and how you want services to be set up in the future, to gain a better understanding of what people think is important. This work will build upon work we carried out last year on people’s experiences of changes in access during the pandemic.
Healthwatch has been working with the Community Healthcare Forum, VODA and other partners to investigate these issues. The findings will be used by North Tyneside’s GP practices, Primary Care Networks and North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to review how they work and plan for the future.
In addition, North Tyneside CCG asked Healthwatch to gather people’s views and experiences of using the Livi online GP service. Read our findings about Livi here.
Though our GP access research we heard from lots of people who were unsure about the changes to GP services and why things are done differently. In response, we have worked with TyneHealth and North Tyneside CCG to create a resource to help people understand why GP practices work the way they do, and why things may have changed due to Covid-19. This is being used by GP practices across North Tyneside to help inform their patients. Read more here.
Accessing primary care – the future
GP services necessarily changed because of coronavirus, so that now if you need help, a clinical assessment or triage is usually completed over the phone to identify the best support for your health needs.
During May 2020, we asked for people’s views and experiences of these changes, and their opinions about whether some new ways of working could continue in the future.
We published our findings in July 2020, read our report – Accessing primary care – the future
Good practice – accessing GP appointments
Local people told us that accessing GP services was an important issue for them.
Our volunteers visited GP practices to talk to patients and visitors about their experiences of making appointments. We have now visited all GP practices in North Tyneside and have heard from over 1600 people about their experiences of using these services.
Our ‘Good practice’ survey helped us find out more about peoples’ experiences of accessing their local GP services. We are sharing our reports with GP practices and will highlight good practice and address any areas in need of improvement.
