What Matters to Young Carers 2024 Survey

Our report on what matters to young carers in North Tyneside 2024 explores how thing have changed for young carers over time, as well as offering a snapshot of what issues are currently affecting them. 83 young carers have told us about their experiences of being a young carer in North Tyneside. We heard that 42% of young carers thought they were providing more care than they did 12 months ago, partly down to the increased needs of the people they care for, but that young carers were, in the main, more positive about the support they receive than in our last young carers survey in 2022.

Caring in North Tyneside in 2022 Survey

As part of the events to mark Carer’s Week, Healthwatch North Tyneside shared the results of the ‘Caring in North Tyneside in 2022’ survey. 681 carers took time to share their views and experiences of caring in a survey conducted with North Tyneside Carers’ Centre on behalf of North Tyneside’s Carers Partnership Board. The study was similar to that carried out in 2021 about carers’ experiences during the pandemic, which allowed us to compare the responses and see progress.

In Summer 2021, we partnered with North Tyneside Carers’ Centre to ask carers in North Tyneside to tell us about their experiences of caring during the pandemic and the impact it had on their wellbeing.

Our work on carers’ issues

In 2018 we published a summary of the issues highlighted by people with caring responsibilities. The report makes recommendations about:

• Identifying carers
• Information, advice and support for carers
• Carer’s Wellbeing Assessments
• The impact that the caring role has on carers

These recommendations have been reviewed by North Tyneside’s Carers’ Partnership Board and being included in future action planning.

Carers’ experiences in hospital

We interviewed 10 carers of people with learning disabilities, ADHD and ASD in hospital in 2017. The issues highlighted are from carers of people with multiple different needs who had been in general hospital wards.

We can also help signpost carers to services that may be of assistance to them.
