Emergency care

In the months running up to the opening of the new Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington, we heard from local people who wanted to know about practicalities of using these hospitals. These are some of the issues people were concerned about:

  • Public transport to the new hospital, how carers and family can get there to visit
  • Where patients will be transferred to when they no longer require urgent care
  • What happens in major, but not immediately life threatening, emergencies such as hip fracture?
  • If patients are discharged from A&E what are the discharge transport arrangements?
  • What are the Trust’s plans for the future of North Tyneside General Hospital?

Jim Mackey, Chief Executive of Northumbria NHS Foundation Trust, came to our Healthwatch Board meeting in May 2015, you can download his answers to our questions below.

In October 2015 we wrote to David Evans, the new Chief Executive, to pass on your feedback and ask for a response to your issues and concerns. You can download and read our letter and briefing note covering the issues raised and the response by David Evans along with activity statistics for A&E at the Northumbria Hospital.

In November 2015 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspected Northumbria NHS Trust hospital and community services. We passed your feedback on the Northumbria Hospital to the CQC to be taken into account when the CQC produced their report.
