We decided to look at hospital food after we heard very different experiences of food at North Tyneside General Hospital – from “wonderful” to “appalling”. We met with the Catering Manager and our volunteers followed the food journey at the hospital. In June and November 2015 some of our enter and view volunteers visited wards at North Tyneside General Hospital to talk to patients, families and staff about hospital food.
We reported on our their findings and asked Northumbria NHS Trust for a response to our recommendations. In January 2017 we met again with the trust for an update on progress. An update is attached to the end of the report.
Your experiences of hospital food – 2014
We wanted to understand the hospital food journey from arriving in the kitchen to when it reaches the patient. Catering manager Wayne Roper spent the morning with two of our experienced volunteers walking them through the food journey and answering questions.
